The Shawnee County Commissioners, employees and residents have a deep commitment to the cleanliness and beauty of our community and the environment. Long time partners of Keep America Beautiful-Topeka/Shawnee County, Shawnee County has provided funding for many years to the local KAB affiliate.
Environmental programs that Shawnee County has participated in include: Project Takeover/Makeover, Return the Warmth, Students for Recycling, the Kansas Lawn and Garden Show, and Topeka Water Festival. Shawnee County has also held periodic tire amnesty days, waiving the fees on recycling tires, to help prevent them from ending up in the county waterways and along county roads. Shawnee County has also installed a beautiful garden at Lake Shawnee. They have implemented a volunteer program to help maintain these beautiful gardens called “Friends of Ensley Gardens.”
Shawnee County has a not-for-profit Recycling Department that places public drop off bins at various locations around Shawnee County, to make it convenient for the citizens to recycle their recyclable materials and make certain that they don’t end up in the landfill. Shawnee County Recycling Department also collects recyclable material from over 600 businesses in the community. They make certain that all recyclables are collected, sorted and sent to the proper processing facilities.
Shawnee County also has the only Household Hazardous Waste collections in Shawnee County. This facility processes household hazardous waste for the citizens of Shawnee County, making certain that all federal and state regulations for handling hazardous waste are met.
Shawnee County is a strong supporter of the local Keep America Beautiful affiliate, and will continue to promote and support positive environmental practices in this community.
